  ELISABETH Barging Burgundy LTD       #4121942
Elis_Aux_web_small.JPG (100593 bytes)

Welcome.  Elisabeth is a 30 meter Dutch Luxemoteur barge built in Rotterdam Holland in 1930. Originally converted in 1988, her  refurbishing includes full air-conditioning and is now a comfortable home away from home. The large wheelhouse is the perfect place to watch the world go by whilst chatting with the captain. The sundeck is ideal for lounging, 'al fresco' lunches and sundowners. The bow deck is good for that quiet read or peaceful sunbathe. Restful and relaxed - the perfect words to describe your canal cruise aboard the Elisabeth.  Leisure barge travel on your own crewed chartered canal boat. What better way to be cruising France? Accommodating 6 passengers,  Elisabeth's passenger areas were redesigned and extensively rebuilt after the 2007 season,  so that they now offer three identical roomy cabins with twin or queen beds and a new salon/dining area. The barge is very comfortably appointed as a small private hotel just for you. The large wheelhouse is the perfect place to watch the world go by while chatting with the captain-owners aboard.

With a crew of 4, including your hosts Peter and Sheena Jenner, to look after you there is always someone on hand to make drinks, organise bikes or just to tell you the local stories and history. Elisabeth loves to welcome groups of friends or families, even if your children are young. (No minimum or maximum age limit) There is something for everyone on Elisabeth. For family charters, she can be prepared with toddlers in mind. Cots, high chairs, paddling pools, kayaks, bicycles for children - No problem, we have them. Boating for the whole family! ... and the ultimate vacation! Naturally, when we have young guests aboard, our itineraries can be adjusted to suit all members of the party.

With a choice of cruise route between the Canal de Bourgogne in the heart of Burgundy for a fabulous "Chocolate and Wine Cruise" from April through the end of May, and then the beautiful, rural Canal du Nivernais for the remainder of the season, Elisabeth cruises past vineyards, bucolic farms, patient fishermen, and dramatic towering cliffs. We have chosen the Canal du Nivernais for cruising as it is an area of outstanding beauty and because it offers so many things that make for a great holiday. Catch up on the daily news from the lockkeepers as we help to wind the locks on this beautiful 18th Century canal. With the benefit of our local knowledge and minivan, each day you will visit some of our favorite places. One day it might be a medieval town, with cobblestone streets and gothic cathedral or perhaps a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another day a "foie gras" tasting. We have also found a delightful 12th century chateau, and provide a private tour of the Caves de Bailly, the second oldest cave paintings in the world. Of course, no visit to Burgundy would be complete without sampling the superb wines of this world-famous wine region.

Elisabeth will be cruising the Canal du Bourgogne from April 1- May 26. May 27 Cruise will to Auxerre, Canal du Nivernais, then Elisabeth will continue cruising from Auxerre-Clamecy & back through the October 28th cruise. In 2007, we'll be doing a Holland Tulip Cruises starting March 26.

Barge Elisabeth welcomes groups of friends or families, even if your children are young. (No minimum or maximum age limit) There is something for everyone on Elisabeth. II. Other Ideas...

Biking or walking We can plan a daily route depending on how far you wish to bike/walk. Easy, medium or difficult routes can be arranged, the Nivernais area has something for everyone. Using topographical maps the routes are simple to follow and a picnic is always possible.
Art or Photography No region could be better suited to either the artist or the photographer. With each change of season there is always something new. Be it architecture or nature we can take you to sites that we are sure will inspire interest in amateur and professional alike.
Adventure This is where you can add a bit of spice to your cruise! You can add any of the following activities to your week: golf, horse riding, biking, ballooning, climbing, kayaking, canoeing or walking. There is a supplement for various activities and all insurances are payable by clients. If you have a special activity in mind we can see if it is possible. A day at Euro Disney can also be added.
Cookery What better place to learn new recipes than in the heart of Burgundy, a place renowned for its gourmet food and wine. This week includes daily demonstrations by Sheena and visiting guest chefs. Visit to a restaurant kitchen and tips from the chefs. Easy, elegant dinners and delicious desserts, not forgetting appetizers for cocktail hour. The week is designed to enable you to return home with new recipe ideas.
History

Burgundy is brimming full of history from the superior Jurassic era at Arcy sur Cure to the Romans, at Escolives. Stunning medieval villages and towns, like Vézelay where Richard the Lionheart preached for the 3rd Crusade and Auxerre's beautiful timber-framed buildings. Vauban's twelfth century chateau has a wonderful collection of Louis IV to VI furniture. All this and more is Burgundy.

Introducing the Crew

Your barging captains aboard Elisabeth, Peter and Sheena Jenner, have been living in Burgundy since 1990 and have acquired a love and knowledge of the region, its food and, of course, its wines. Peter is an experienced Captain, with a Class A French Barge License, and has piloted 38 meter hotel boat barges, as well as Elisabeth, for the last nine years. He loves the waterways and happily shares his enthusiasm for them with lots of anecdotes and stories. Sheena too enjoys the life afloat and as tour guide/manager of the barge she personalizes each tour to suit the requirements of the guests.  With a highly-qualified chef and hostess to complete the crew of four you can be sure of a well-adapted and comfortable cruise aboard Elisabeth. We look forward to sharing our local knowledge, love of Burgundy and of barging, with you. ...Why not come and meet us and some of our friends?

Finally, there's Bonnie!  Peter & Sheena's little West Highland White Terrier is affectionate, loveable, and firmly believes that everyone aboard is under her charge. She adores all children, and especially loves anyone with a willing lap and a gentle cuddle.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a minimum or maximum age limit for a barge cruise? On board Elisabeth, there are no age limits. From baby to grandparents, there is something for everyone and everyone is welcome.
I've heard barge cruising is slow. Is it boring? No, you can be as busy (cycle or walk along the towpath, help wind the lock) or be as relaxed as YOU wish. Don't forget there's a minibus tour each day! We take you to visit some of our favorite places. There are, of course, the menus, wines and cheeses chosen for you. Maybe a picnic lunch down in a beautiful riverside setting, or a lively evening barbecue. (You can even help the Captain with the barbecue.)
Telephones A mobile phone is aboard Elisabeth for all emergency communications. We can receive emails, if necessary.
Is the boat likely to rock much? With a maximum speed of 6 KM an hour, although very seldom do we go that quickly, your time aboard will be very gentle. It has been said that the lapping of the water against the hull actually helps people to sleep.
Is one time of year better than another? Spring in Burgundy can be lovely or changeable, as can Autumn. Music Week in June. Bastille Day is the 14th of July- fireworks on the night of the 13th in Auxerre. There's the vendage (grape harvest) in September. And, of course, we visit museums, chateaux, towns, etc. all season long.
