Loung Ung - author of First They Killed My Father

Book Talk & Book Signing at Bellows Falls Union High School Auditorium

The Literary Kick-Off Program was initiated by Bellows Falls Union High teacher Craig Divis in 2010. Divis is a Social Studies Teacher and Department Coordinator at BFUHS and was honored as the 2010 Vermont Teacher of the Year.

The program is designed with two main goals in mind: 1) to provide students with a structured summer educational project, and 2) to excite students about the upcoming school year with the author of the chosen book coming to speak to the students and community.

By the end of the 2009-2010 school year, every student received a copy of the book. The chosen book is interdisciplinary in nature, has a connection to Vermont, and is written by an author who is available to speak to the student body and community.

At the start of the new school year, teachers will be connecting the content of the book and the author to their content area with engaging activities, discussions, and projects. It is up to each teacher to decide how he/she will use the book in his/her specific classes.

School-wide activities will include a Student Competition for all students. There will be four winners chosen who will be honored with a special dinner with the author. The winners will also have the opportunity to read their entries before the school-wide assembly and the evening community event on Wed., September 8th.

The culminating event and highlight of the Literary Kick-Off Program is this September 8th visit and presentation by the author of the book, with the intended goal being to inspire and motivate the students at the start of the new school year.

The Rockingham Free Public Library is partnering with the Bellows Falls Union High School in the program & will be setting up events.

Village Square Booksellers will have an autographing table set up in the back of the auditorium at the September 8, 2010 event.

Alan Fowler will be filming the event for FACT 8 Local Access TV.

One of seven children of a high-ranking government official, Loung Ung lived a privileged life in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh until the age of five. Then, in April 1975, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army stormed into the city, forcing Ung's family to flee and, eventually, to disperse. Loung was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans, her siblings were sent to labor camps, and those who survived the horrors would not be reunited until the Khmer Rouge was destroyed.

Harrowing yet hopeful, Loung's powerful story is an unforgettable account of a family shaken and shattered, yet miraculously sustained by courage and love in the face of unspeakable brutality.

Students at Bellows Falls Union High School all received a copy of the book. But community members are welcome to participate in this one-book program.
