Celebrating Student Poetry in Windham County

March is Student Art Month

March is Student Art Month in Windham County and the Arts Council of Windham County is again organizing shows and events that will spotlight the great art coming from our young people, and the teachers and school infrastructures that help young artists to blossom.

Our goals with Student Arts Month include:

            Recognizing and validating high quality art by young people

            Bringing public attention to the vibrant youth art community

            Informing the community of the quality of art instruction in our schools

            Bringing young artists together from different schools and communities

            Developing ways for the county arts community to strengthen art education

This year we are adding poetry to the arts to be celebrated.  As visual and aural arts provide tools and traditions to explore how we see and hear our world, so  poetry provides a window into language and how we shape it and it shapes our experience of the world.

There will be two Poetry events for young poets from across the county you should know about.

Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 will be the monthly Poetry Slam at the Boys and Girls Club at 17 Flat Street in Brattleboro.  This event will be recorded for TV broadcast and we would like it to include the best young poets from our county.  Details from rickybratt@gmail.com

Saturday, March 10, Village Square Booksellers, 32 the Square, Bellows Falls, will host an open mike poetry reading at 2:00 with a focus on young poets from Windham County.  Details from info@villagesquarebooks.com

Friday, March 16, Village Square Booksellers, 32 the Square, Bellows Falls, will host an open mike poetry reading at 7:00 highlighting the best young poets from Windham County.  Details from info@villagesquarebooks.com
