Come to the Rockingham Free Public Library (RFPL) on Wednesday January 26 at 7pm for a trip down the memory lanes of Vermont. Photographer and local historian Forrest Holzapfel will present a lively and entertaining program on the interesting role of the Village Photographer in nineteenth-century Vermont.
An historian and photographer himself, Holzapfel will discuss and demonstrate  how his own work continues in the same tradition by creating a body of contemporary photographs and oral histories depicting the people and landscapes of  his hometown, Marlboro, Vermont. He will offer suggestions and techniques to those who would like to undertake similar documentation of their own towns.
Holzapfel has had numerous exhibitions and was the recipient of a 2003 Individual Achievement Award from the Vermont Historical Society for his work. He is vice president of the Marlboro Historical Society.
This program also highlights Rockingham  Library’s participation in the American Heritage Preservation Grants Program which enabled the Library  to rehouse its cataloged  historical photograph collection and create duplicates; allowing the public to view the photographs without compromising the safety of the originals. Reference and Historical Librarian Emily Zervas says, “The RFPL Photograph Collection documents the Rockingham area’s rich history as a Native American gathering place,  railroad  hub, industrial center, vacation destination, dairy capital and cultural center. It is the most frequently used  resource from  the Library’s historical collection.”  And luckily,this collection  is housed separately from the Historical Room, which was  flooded last month.
