Boston, Tuesday, October 21, 1975. The Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds have endured an excruciating three-day rain delay. Tonight, at last, they will play Game Six of the World Series. Leading three games to two, Cincinnati hopes to win it all; Boston is desperate to stay alive. But for all the anticipation, nobody could have predicted what a classic it would turn out to be: an extra-innings thriller, created by one of the Big Red Machine's patented comebacks and the Red Sox's improbable late-inning rally; clutch hitting, heart-stopping defensive plays, and more twists and turns than a Grand Prix circuit, climaxed by one of the most famous home runs in baseball history that ended it in the twelfth. From bestselling author Mark Frost, Game Six is an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at what is considered by many to be the greatest baseball game ever played. Pat's Note: a great book for the Red Sox Nation!

Witch & Wizard was written by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet.  It describes a NEW ORDER where art, music, free expression, imagination and most of all Magic, are banned and all proponents of them, especially children, are imprisoned and killed. High Schoolers Whit & his sister Wisteria (Wisty) are betrayed by classmate Byron Swain and end up being sentenced to death in a mock trial by The One Who Judges, following the orders of The One Who Is The One, head of the New Order government. A converted insane asylum is used as Death Row.

Whit and Wisty learn to use their magical powers and are aided by Whit's girlfriend Celia, who now lives in the Shadowland as a Half-light, or ghost and Freelander Sasha.

The book is fast-paced with lots of action. Each chapter tells the story as seen by one of the characters. Obviously, it's the start of a new YA Fantasy series.

It's Llama Llama's first day of preschool! And Llama Llama's mama makes sure he's ready. They meet the teachers. See the other children. He looks at all the books and games. But then it's time for Mama to leave. And suddenly Llama Llama is not so excited anymore. Llama Llama feels all alone. Will Mama Llama come back? Of course she will. But before she does, the other children show Llama Llama how much fun school can be! - - - I have read this to several KG classes this Spring. Every year during the last week at school I read a book aloud at the Saxtons River Elementary School's KG class. I picked this book because several of the students just adore Llama Llama books by local author Anna Dewdney.

Meet Will Carter, but feel free to call him Carter. (Yes, he knows it's a lazy nickname, but he didn't have much say in the matter.) Here are five things you should know about him: 1. He has a stuttering problem, particularly around boobs and belly buttons. 2. He battles Attention Deficit Disorder every minute of every day unless he gets distracted. 3. He's a virgin, mostly because he's no good at talking to girls (see number 1). 4. He's about to start high school. 5. He's totally not ready. Join Carter for his freshman year, where he'll search for sex, love, and acceptance anywhere he can find it. In the process, he'll almost kill a trombone player, face off against his greatest nemesis, get caught up in a messy love triangle, suffer a lot of blood loss, narrowly escape death, run from the cops (not once, but twice), meet his match in the form of a curvy drill teamer, and surprise everyone, including himself. Pat's Note: This is a laugh-out-loud novel about getting through high school, getting the girl, and getting it together - join Will Carter as he enters his freshman year in high school.

Laurel was mesmerized, staring at the pale things with wide eyes. They were terrifyingly beautiful--too beautiful for words. Laurel turned to the mirror again, her eyes on the hovering petals that floated beside her head. They looked almost like wings. In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.

This is the ninth of Black's novels about the chic, indomitable Parisian detective, and it has all the elements Black's readers have come to cherish: an engaging protagonist with a likable sidekick (her diminutive partner, Rene Friant), cops who hinder more than they help, villains with murky motives, grisly crimes and, above all, the unique Parisian atmosphere. A Haitian woman arrives at the office of Leduc Detective and announces that she is Aimee's sister, her father's illegitimate daughter. Aimee is thrilled. A virtual orphan since her mother's disappearance and her father's death, she has always wanted a sister. Her partner, Rene, is wary of this stranger, but Aimee embraces her and soon finds herself involved in murky Haitian politics leading to murder. The setting is the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank of the Seine, in the old university district of Paris. Pat's Note: Yes - I do get to read adult books sometimes! And I do love mystery series, especially those set in Europe. Having walked around this part of Paris while we were living aboard our Dutch Barge, Zee Otter, it's even more fun.

The Little Prince (Paperback)

An aviator whose plane is forced down in the Sahara Desert encounters a little prince from a small planet who relates his adventures in seeking the secret of what is important in life. Few stories are as widely read and as universally cherished by children and adults alike as The Little Prince. Richard Howard's new translation of the beloved classic-published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's birth-beautifully reflects Saint-Exupery's unique and gifted style. Howard, an acclaimed poet and one of the preeminent translators of our time, has excelled in bringing the English text as close as possible to the French, in language, style, and most important, spirit. The artwork in this new edition has been restored to match in detail and in color Saint-Exupery's original artwork. Pat's Note: I remember reading this novel at SUNY Cortland with my French teacher, Mr. Bartlett - and then having to write a paper about it in French!

In a highly awaited new novel, Kate DiCamillo conjures a haunting fable about trusting the unexpected -- and making the extraordinary come true. What if? Why not? Could it be? When a fortuneteller's tent appears in the market square of the city of Baltese, orphan Peter Augustus Duchene knows the questions that he needs to ask: Does his sister still live? And if so, how can he find her? The fortuneteller's mysterious answer (an elephant! An elephant will lead him there!) sets off a chain of events so remarkable, so impossible, that you will hardly dare to believe it's true. With atmospheric illustrations by fine artist Yoko Tanaka, here is a dreamlike and captivating tale that could only be narrated by Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo. In this timeless fable, she evokes the largest of themes -- hope and belonging, desire and compassion -- with the lightness of a magician's touch. Pat's Note: I got a chance to visit the Candlewick Press office in June during a New England Children's Booksellers Association meeting. We learned about the whole process of putting the new book together - choosing an artist, choosing the artwork and modifying it for printing the book and then preparing the cover; choosing the book's size, the paper color and weight, and all of the little details that will make this book a classic. It really reminds me of The Little Prince - a good yarn with lots of philosophy between the lines for people to read into the story.
