About Independents

School Orders

We work with local schools to order books for their courses.  20% discount, non-taxable.  Larger orders may be negotiable for a larger discount.

School Book Fairs

We started doing book fairs in our local schools during the 2006-2007 school year. From one day to one week, we will work with your staff to choose suitable materials for your book fairs. We are in the business of connecting children with books- we won't try to sell them cute pens or trendy posters!  Our Book Fair will offer a selection of books from our store's extensive Children & Young Adult Sections- Fiction, Fantasy, Art, Music, Mystery, Sports, Science & Nature.

A percentage of the profit can be used to purchase books in our store or will be donated to the school's PTA.

Personal Shopper Service

Do you need help choosing just the right book?  Let one of our staff members help you make your selection.

Give us a call at 802-463-9404, stop by the store, or email us.

Our staff will brainstorm with you to help you choose a perfect gift for someone on your gift list. What's their interests? Do you know any other books they've enjoyed?

We'll be happy to wrap your gift with our Free Gift Warp service, and will arrange for shipping if necessary.

Book Club Discounts

We're here to serve our area book clubs with discounts, a clean, well-lighted place, and more than a few amenities to make you all comfortable.

We offer book discounts for all book clubs who purchase their books from us and/ or choose to meet in our lounge. Decide on a name for your club (if you haven't already), and have a representative from your club come in and let us know your club's name, and which book (and how many) you'll need us to order for you for the month and the number of books to order. You can also email your orders to us or send us a long-term schedule. Just give us a list of the names of members and we'll hold their books behind the counter for pick-up. Oh--and we'll give you each 10% off your club purchases.

Hosting Your Book Club Gathering
We are delighted to host your book club gatherings in our cafe. We'll give you a cozy space to meet. With Green Mountain Coffee, Republic of tea collection, and various cold juices, we're here to take good care of you. Space is first come, first serve,
so simply stop in to schedule a time.

Mail order - shipments within the United States only

Mail orders: our book distributor offers a new Direct-to-home service- we can have any book shipped directly from their warehouse to you or have a book gift-wrapped and sent.  They charge .65 each item plus shipping costs (depends on method) and gift wrap is 1.25.  This is the quickest way we can get a book delivered.

Mail orders of on-hand items: if you need a package shipped as a gift, we'll be glad to provide our free gift wrap service & send it out for you.

Fed Ex Shipping for U.S. shipments: your shipping time will be 3 to 7 business days, depending on where you want us to ship the books. This means your gift's total delivery time for in-stock items will be 1 day (availability) + 3 to 7 days (shipping time). So you can expect to have your gift arrive at it's destination 4 to 8 days after you place your order.  For Next Day Air shipping, the items will ship within 24 hours and arrive on the following business day--two business days total. Please also keep in mind that there are no weekend pickups in Bellows Falls, Vermont and that the UPS driver comes to the hardware store (the shipping service we use) store mid-day.  For really urgent shipments, we can manage to track the driver down in the village as he makes his rounds...

We are estimating the Fed Ex shipping costs to be :

Standard:    $5.50

2nd Day:    $8.99

Next Day:    $12.99

Please note: If our shipping costs are less, your costs will be too.  Shipping is not a profit-center for Village Square Booksellers.

Media Mail (US Postal Service) :  billed at actual costs

We accept American Express, Visa, Master Card, Discover & Diner's Club credit cards.

We utilize a Paypal shopping cart for online purchases & also accept payments through Paypal.

Please note that we do not ship outside the US & Canada and do not accept orders for multiple copies of books to be shipped overseas or to out-of-state locations without prior approval.  All purchases by credit card are subject to approval by banking authorization.

THE MARCH OF THE LITERATI     copyright 4-28-02  Audrey Boerum

Their bookstore was moving!

About 40 volunteers, customers

left their cozy homes and weekend chores

to brave the sleet-slick, rainy day

downtown in the village square.

One could almost hear the books sigh with relief

as carts and box-filled arms

snaked their way

from the little store

where there was barely room to browse or maneuver,

into the spacious warm and welcoming quarters.

In the background, drills hummed, saws buzzed,

tunes played and everyone sang

to the tunes of "Vinnie the Vet", "Ezra Veitch"

and other snappy CD's.

It was like an old New England barn raising -

IT WAS THE MARCH OF THE LITTERATI...

The Village Square Booksellers were moving!

There were youths from town,

a few notables and officials,

members of the Chamber, local business folk,

a nurse, a teacher, a lawyer, a waitress,

a postal carrier, B and B owners, a psychologist,

an artist, an engineer, a librarian, a reporter - and more

All took part in this big community event -

Their bookstore was moving

Everyone knew everyone else.

Breakfast goodies and gallons of coffee

melted the early birds.

Later, a lunch appeared for all.

Yawning bookshelves filled,

markers were readjusted

Biographies next to History, Travel next to New Age,

and so on

Displays assembled,

Cartons and boxes of books

found their way to empty shelves

in the cavernous store.

A sense of possession was the spirit of the day

with the cry of, "Barnes and Noble, eat your heart out!"

In addition to supporting local schools and libraries, Village Square Booksellers (VSB) also provided Cornerstone Pediatrics a 20% discount to help them establish their lending library in 2001. In 2004, we sold over $3000 worth of books at cost to establish the Peggy Reagan Memorial Collection in the Bellows Falls Middle School.

Pat has helped the Bellows Falls Downtown Development  Alliances' Promotion Committee and the www.bellowsfalls.org website was maintained by VSB for more than 3 years.

Pat is Secretary of the Our Town Civic Organization, and she coordinated the Rockingham Old Home Days Art Show from 2000-2 (still serving on the ROHD committee), and has run the Our Town Front Porch Summer Entertainment Series since 2000.

Oh yes- Pat is past president of the Friends of the Library, & Past-President of the Great Falls Regional Chamber of Commerce (still on the Board).  Pat maintains the Chamber website www.gfrcc.org . Sometimes, all these hats get a bit confusing, especially when projects link together.

Pat was a member of the Rockingham 250th Committee and the Voices on the Connecticut River event that brought State Poets Grace Paley & Marie Harris to our area to visit our schools and attend a poetry symposium.

Pat reads weekly at Central School in their Breakfast program.

Alan is involved in the local arts community, as Bookkeeper of the Jelly Bean Arts Cooperative in Saxtons River (part of Main Street Arts) and works on his photography when he is not working at VSB.  In 2004 he took on the responsibility of Treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce.   His photographs were used for the Bellows Falls Historical Tour guide and the Rockingham Meeting House brochure. He is available for studio work.

VS Books has been a sponsor of the Roots on the River - Fred Eaglesmith weekend. VS Books was a sponsor of Main Street Arts' The Mikado in 2003.

We also support our local community by holding special events as a benefit- authors at the Rockingham Meeting House, Bellows Falls Historical Society benefit dinner for a new book on Hetty Green (the proceeds of the dinner & a 20% donation from each book sold by VS Books provided a new security system for the Adams Grist Mill), an 8-author event for the 2004 Vermont Preservation Conference, in which proceeds from book sales are donated to the local organizations.

Our windows have displayed Student Art (Westminster School, Compass School) the Rockingham 250th Blankets for the Central Elementary School Playground Fund, and Our Town Door Toppers, the Empty Bowl display for the Our Place Food Shelter, Quilts for the Westminster Quilt Show, the bike for Rotary's Bike Raffle.  We sell many charity items and event tickets in the store, all at no charge to the organization.  Many community groups use our shaded awning area to solicit donations on Saturdays.

Village Square Booksellers supported ABA's Prescription for Reading program to donate free books to children sponsored by the American Booksellers Assn. in 2001 and 2002. Local doctors participating included Cornerstone Pediatrics, Dr. Eliot Hall, Dr Wally Griffiths, and doctors in Walpole.

ABOUT INDEPENDENTS

As cities, towns, and neighborhoods deal with the changing landscape of their local business community, we, the independent booksellers of America, reaffirm our commitment to our communities. Independent bookstores value our place in the community, as well as our ongoing connections within it. We'd like to offer some other defining thoughts about independent bookstores.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSELLERS talk with our customers directly and enjoy fulfilling - even exceeding - their expectations, whether its recommending a great book we've just read, or helping you discover new or little known authors or publishers.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES have an onsite owner - we're right there answering questions and making decisions, rather than relying on a corporate office, thousands of miles away.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSELLERS are leaders in the fight against censorship and other threats to freedom of expression.

INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES reflect the character of our communities. We support local causes. We participate in and fund community activities. We patronize other local businesses and keep our money in the community.

NCIBA diving line

Our mission is "To promote the vitality, diversity and prosperity of independent bookselling as essential to the life of our communities and crucial to the dissemination of ideas in society."
